Current Solar Images

Click on any of the following thumbnail images for the most recent, solar image of each type in the SDAC archive, at the highest resolution available on the same day as the images are obtained. The page automatically reloads images every 30 minutes. All times are in coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA)
Notes on AIA Images

The color tables used to display AIA images here are the ones used to display similar bandpasses for SOHO EIT and STEREO EUVI images. The color tables preferred by the AIA Principal Investigator Team can be found in the images at the LMSAL Sun Today site. Full spatial resolution, 4096 x 4096 data are not available until roughly four days after this lower resolution, space weather product.

Color tables for the 94, 131, and 335 Å bandpasses are still under development.

Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)
Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI)
Hinode soft X-rays
and groundbased observatories
Note: SOLIS images

SOLIS instrumentation is being moved and we do not expect current images again before early September.

Notes on HMI Images

Images of the latest HMI magnetogram and intensitygram, and movies of the most recent two days of each. As with AIA, full resolution image data are not available for about four days after the time the images are taken.

Movies of the last two days of HMI magnetograms and intensitygrams are also available.

The latest images from other spacecraft and groundbased observatories.

Please note that we can't guarantee that the most recent image of each type was obtained in the last 24 hours: curious agglomerations of water vapor and dust called clouds sometimes appear over observatories on Earth, and even people who operate spacecraft take a day off from time to time.
