SXT Status Report July 1-23, 2001 (Weeks 27-29) A. Takeda, D. McKenzie SOLAR ACTIVITY Low solar activity, with only two M-class flares in three weeks - neither observed well by Yohkoh, unfortunately. There were only five numbered NOAA regions on July 7 and 8! But as usual there were things to watch, including a coronal "island universe" - a group of small active regions apparently surrounded entirely by coronal-hole regions (CMP about July 15, and well worth a science nugget some time). OBSERVING CAMPAIGNS The Coronal Magnetography (JOP 100) campaign ran on several days in these weeks. We cooperated with it except the one in the weekend. We took part in another campaign, led by CDS during the week 29. It was to study velocity fields at the footpoints of interconnecting loops. We fortunately met a good target with ICLs among ARs 9537, 9539, and 9551. Please see our webpages for details about campaigns past and future: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS AND CALIBRATION ACTIVITIES Yohkoh satellite normal pointing was adjusted on 6-JUL-01 and 21-JUL-01. OBSERVING SEQUENCES: We continue with the old standard FFI tables, with equal numbers of AlMg and Al.1 movie pairs. The flare table continues at 2x2 in hopes of waves (and inflows and outflows). In PFI tables, we went to the ARS2 pointing during the campaigns. The field of views were rather irregular in shape; 4x2, 3x2, 2x4, according to the extent of the targets. SCIENCE NUGGETS: July 6: "Breaking records -- It's all about latitude!" discusses an extraordinarily high-latitude active region, which we hope provides evidence that the solar maximum is far from finished. July 13: "Bastille Day through history" hopes to lure amateur historians or French people to our Web site. Basically this nugget notes that July 14 was interesting for the past three even-numbered years, and thus predicted (successfully) that July 14, 2001, would be dull. July 20: "Three-part harmony" presents recent interesting observations showing that the well-known CME morphology of front, cavity, and core also has counterparts in soft X-rays and meter waves. The full list of recent nuggets is kept on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html and the current week's nugget also normally resides on http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html For the complete nugget archive, see one of the following sites. http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html SEMINARS: No seminars during this interval.
