CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 24 11-Jun-01 through 16-Jun-01 D. McKenzie GENERAL Flare activity was moderate with three M-class flares reported, and several good C flares. By the end of the week, two regions in the eastern solar hemisphere were responsible for a great deal of activity. These will probably continue to be interesting. SXT TECHNICAL This week we began using a new, simpler table for flare mode images; the goal is to provide optimum support for HESSI during the early phase of that mission. The flare PFIs will be made in Be and AlMg filters, full resolution, and with AEC optimized to allow no saturated pixels. We had several opportunities to test the new table this week, and adjustments were made to the starting DPE levels. SXT SCIENTIFIC For Web material see the science nuggets: Current Week: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/010615.html Index: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/index.html This week's science nugget discusses two cases in which brightness enhancements can be seen to propagate along the length of coronal loops. CAMPAIGNS On Thursday, there will be a solar eclipse after the last KSC pass. We intend to make pretty eclipse movies, and we hope to get good PFI data during the moon's transit. For SXT plans, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_future.html For SXT completed campaigns, see: http://isass1.solar.isas.ac.jp/sxt_co/sxt_catalog.html PERSONNEL H. Hudson arrived on 15th. SEMINARS No seminar for this week. SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 25 (18-Jun-01 through 23-Jun-01) This week, a solar eclipse occurs on Thursday, 21-Jun (1200-1500 UT). Our table for the eclipse may have ARS0 (or ARS2) partial-Sun images. Also, HESSI launch is currently scheduled for 21-Jun. There are two table uploads on Tuesday and on Wednesday. _______________________________________________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday AM 17-JUN-01 23:17 2 010617 P2 ARS1 STD Tuesday AM 18-JUN-01 21:36 1 010618 P1 ARS1 DRK Tuesday AM 19-JUN-01 02:40 4 010618 P4 ARS1 STD Wednesday AM 19-JUN-01 21:36 1 010619 P1 ARS1 DIF Wednesday AM 20-JUN-01 02:40 4 010619 P4 ARS1 STD Thursday AM 21-JUN-01 02:40 4 010620 P4 ARS0 ECLIPSE Friday AM 21-Jun-01 19:55 1 010621 P1 ARS1 STD Saturday AM 22-Jun-01 23:16 3 010622 P3 ARS1 STD The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1. Continuing requests: KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
