CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 24

GENERAL 

Flare activity was moderate with three M-class flares reported, and
several good C flares.  By the end of the week, two regions in the eastern
solar hemisphere were responsible for a great deal of activity.  These
will probably continue to be interesting.


SXT TECHNICAL 

This week we began using a new, simpler table for flare mode images; the
goal is to provide optimum support for HESSI during the early phase of
that mission.  The flare PFIs will be made in Be and AlMg filters, full
resolution, and with AEC optimized to allow no saturated pixels.  We had
several opportunities to test the new table this week, and adjustments
were made to the starting DPE levels.

This week's science nugget discusses two cases in which brightness
enhancements can be seen to propagate along the length of coronal loops.


CAMPAIGNS 

On Thursday, there will be a solar eclipse after the last KSC pass.  We 
intend to make pretty eclipse movies, and we hope to get good PFI data 
during the moon's transit.

                     SXT TABLE PLAN, WEEK 25

This week, a solar eclipse occurs on Thursday, 21-Jun (1200-1500 UT).
Our table for the eclipse may have ARS0 (or ARS2) partial-Sun images.  
Also, HESSI launch is currently scheduled for 21-Jun.  There are two 
table uploads on Tuesday and on Wednesday.

The date part of a table ID reflects the UT date of pass 1.

This table plan is likely to change.  Prepare for last minute changes.

Continuing requests:

KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for
example due to typhoons) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for any 
reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately.
(sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp).

KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, i.e. if a
flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the
chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table
without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers
should keep an eye on this.
