30 May 1998 David McKenzie SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT AND TABLE PLAN CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 22 25-May-98 to 31-May-98 SOLAR ACTIVITY The Sun was quiet until 27-May, when the activity suddenly began increasing again. We observed two M flares and a number of CMEs. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS SXT has been working fine. No problems to report. The Chief Observers feel that it is time for another adjustment to the normal pointing. We request an OP+OG upload, and an ROG #032 (decimal) for Tuesday. SXT SCIENCE For Web material see Current Week: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/SXTweekly.html Index: ftp://isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp/pub/sxt_co/index.html In this week's webpage we describe a coronal feature observed to connect two very distant active regions. CAMPAIGNS This week TRACE began a two-week campaign to follow an active region all the way across the disk. We made observations to help support this. PERSONNEL No personnel changes this week. SEMINARS There was no seminar this week. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 98_23 (01-Jun-98 - 06-Jun-98) SXT Chief Observer: McKenzie This week we will try to support Karin Muglach's AR campaign; the TRACE AR campaign is looking at the same target. ________________________________#_______________________________ JST Day UT Start Time Pass Table ID Monday 01-JUN-98 05:38 2 980601 P2 ARS2 STD Tuesday 02-JUN-98 05:56 2 980602 P2 ARS2 DARKCAL Wednesday 03-JUN-98 04:31 2 980603 P2 ARS2 STD+DIFF Thursday 04-JUN-98 04:48 2 980604 P2 ARS2 STD Friday 05-JUN-98 03:23 2 980605 P2 ARS2 STD Saturday 06-JUN-98 03:41 2 980606 P2 ARS2 STD NOTE: This plan may be changed. Continuing requests: SSOC Tohban: On the weekly visible diagram, please mark the official five passes first and then cross out those passes that will be given to other satellites. That way we can keep the numbering straight in the Yohkoh software system. SSOC Tohban: SXT operations do not currently include terminator off- pointing. It is unnecessary this week to ask the SXT Chief Observer for terminator off-pointing information. KSC & SSOC Tohbans: If any KSC passes are likely to be cancelled (for example due to a typhoon) or an SXT table cannot be uploaded for some reason, please telephone and e-mail the Chief Observer immediately. (sxt_co@isass0.solar.isas.ac.jp, copy to sxt_st@flare2.solar.isas.ac.jp). KSC Tohbans: In general flare mode supersedes table upload, ie if a flare is in progress please do not upload a new table, and contact the chief observer. Normally it is OK to go ahead with the planned table without change on the next pass, if it is available. Chief observers should keep an eye on this.
