5 February 1996 James Lemen SXT CHIEF OBSERVER REPORT AND TABLE PLAN SXT CHIEF OBSERVER'S REPORT for Week 05: 29-JAN-96 to 4-FEB-96 SOLAR ACTIVITY The Sun was quiet all last week with no major flares. We spent the week tracking the disk transit of NOAA 7943/44, a beta region that raised the X-ray flux to GOES level A. Many bright points can be observed in the daily SXT AlMg images. SXT INSTRUMENT STATUS No significant SXT errors occurred. SXT continues to function normally. There were two bitmap errors. On Friday-Saturday a one-day CCD bakeout was successfully carried out. The TEC was turned off and one pass later the heater was turned on. The temperature of the CCD was raised to about +20C for about 24 hours. The CCD is now at -20C. CAMPAIGNS There were no specific campaigns during the week. We will resume filament campaigns when a suitable target emerges. SEMINARS Prof Richard Canfield gave a very stimulating seminar this past week on the subject of helicity (current) or twist as observed in the Mees vector magnetograph data and in the SXT images. SXT TABLE PLAN FOR WEEK 06 (5-Feb-96 to 12-FEB-96) This week Serge Savy takes over as the SXT Chief Observer. On Tuesday we will do a DKCAL table. We will continue to track the active region 7944 using ARS1 for about one more day. After this, we may switch to a plan to make PFI observations at the north polar limb with full- resolution. This will correspond to one part of the Mees cardinal stripes program. If a suitable filament appears, we will make that the target of opportunity. The standard FFI diffuser images (both low8 and compressed) will be taken on Wednesday as part of a standard table. This week we continue with the terminator program, but no new OG's need to be prepared. The provisional SXT Table Plan for the week is as follows: KSC Time (start) in JST Pass Table ID _____________(= UT + 9 hrs)______#_______________________________ Monday No Table Load Planned Tuesday 6-FEB-96 12:31 4 960206 P4 ARS1 DKCAL Wednesday 7-FEB-96 09:24 2 960207 P2 ARS1 STD+DIFFU Thursday 8-FEB-96 09:43 3 960208 P3 ARS1 NOR CARD Friday 9-FEB-96 10:03 3 960209 P3 ARS1 NOR CARD Saturday 10-FEB-96 10:22 3 960210 P3 ARS1 STD+LONG *** Please note that this table plan may change *** Dumping Patrol images: We request that KSC tohban continue to dump a patrol image each time an SXT table is loaded to facilitate the study of optimizing ARS parameters for an awfully quiet period. SSOC TOHBAN, please fax the preliminary OP list to D-tou when it contains a terminator so that the Chief Observer can suggest which OG's to use.
