SSOC Tohban Report for Week 31_95 (31 July - 6 August 1995) SSOC : H. Nagajima, H. Hudson KSC : Te. Watanabe, M. Noguchi 1. Solar Activity --------------------------------------------------------- Solar activity was exceedingly low, but we had the thrill of a BearAlert on 5-Aug, 16:00 UT. The message may not have reached the Sun? As of 7-Aug 00:00, the biggest GOES excursion was in the noise at the B level. 2. Standard Operations ---------------------------------------------------- 2.1 SXT Table Uploads : 3 tables -------------------------------------------------------------------------- KSC Time (start:JST=UT+9) Pass# Table ID -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 950731 P2 ARS1 DK CAL 950801 P2 ARS1 STD+LONG 950803 P3 ARS1 STD+LONG -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.2 STT Timer Setting Set on 1 August (Tue), Pass 2. Next STT Timer should be set on 8 August (Tue). 3. Errors & Problems ------------------------------------------------------ 3.1 BCS Error. None reported since last month. 3.2 SXT Error. None reported since last month. Pretty nice, eh? Has this ever happened before? 3.3 OP Error. The weekend OP (op50804) omitted a QRH command prior to AOS at KSC, a result of over-editing to make the OP count come out right. 3.4 Flare 11 keyboard The "n" key is sticky. This may cause problems on RASM password entry (JAPAN18). 3.5 Fax problems There were some fax misses. Please use e-mail as a backup routinely. In particular two daily operations reports did not arrive from KSC. 4. DSN Communications ------------------------------------------------------ 4.1 DSN Strawman Schedule for W34 The ASCA team was not ready for DSN conflict resolution on Friday, so we postponed this until Monday after lunch. This was probably not the right thing to do, because e-mail from Steve Waldherr arrived on Saturday requesting a re-transmission of our cancellation list. 4.2 DSN Forecast Schedule for W33 Two passes cancelled. 4.3 DSN Final Schedule for W32 No passes canceled, but there are two questionable ones that will need to be dealt with in real time. 4.4 Real-time cancellations for W31 2-Aug 13:08, maximum elevation < 10 degrees. 3-Aug 05:05, maximum elevation < 10 degrees 4-Aug two more, same reason 4.5 Test of low elevation at Wallops The tohbans from Week 30 conducted the following test dumps at Wallops low-elevation passes: Date DOY TIME Max. Elev. ------------------------------------------- July 26 DOY207 16:14-16:22 8.9? July 27 DOY208 7:58- 8:58 8.1 July 29 DOY210 6:55- 7:03 6.3 ------------------------------------------- The appearance from Sirius is that the first two worked OK, but the third was lost. An investigation should follow up on this. 5. YOHKOH/ASCA/SFU Pass Conflicts at KSC ---------------------------------- For W31, 8 KSC passes were lost because of the conflicts with ASCA. The current pattern is for a couple of days worth of orbits to be almost exactly out of phase, followed by two more days in which the orbits are in conflict. There are no current pass conflicts between Yohkoh/ASCA and SFU. The KSC holiday schedule for W32 was adjusted so that both ASCA and Yohkoh can have full coverage on different days. This means a 7-day week for Yohkoh operations this week, so we should do it the opposite way next time if possible. 6. Special Operation None. 7. Holiday Schedule Week 32 will be a seven-day week. 8. Visitors to SSOC Two sets of visitors were brought to SSOC to watch Yohkoh operations. One of them included Shoemaker, of the Jupiter-crashing comet. A spirited discussion followed as to whether the "Gigantic Jet" (see Shibata-san's recent entry on SHOW_PIX) was in fact a comet crashing on the Sun. The reconnection theory won out, but tohbans and chief observers should note: the prize for comet discovery with Yohkoh soft X-rays is still unclaimed. 9. Attendance at the Weekly Operations Meeting of 7 August (Monday) Hudson, Kano, Kosugi, Sawa, Weber, Yaji (7 persons, new record!) 10. WOM Schedule Because Akita_san is overlapping as SSOC tohban during the O-bon holiday, it was decided to cancel the WOM meeting for 14-Aug (he can do auto-hikitsugi). The next WOM meeting will be 21-Aug. *********************************************************************** 11. Hikitsugi Items 11.1 Tohbans for Week 32 (7-Aug - 14-Aug) KSC : Watanabe_Te, Masuda SSOC : Kosugi, Akita note: all veterans! This is the right moment for a major panic. 11.2 STT Timer setting The next STT timer setting should be done on 8-Aug (Tue). 11.3 STS-69 SPARTAN Schedule Launch of Endeavour is now targeted for no earlier than mid-August. According to an authoritative source close to the manned space program, this is probably an indefinite delay. 11.4 DSN marginal passes There are two DSN dumps on marginal passes in W32. These may need to be cancelled in real time. 11.5 SXT patrol image dumps The clock command "BC 8C 05(HEX)" is uploaded with each table change. This is to dump an SXT patrol image for reference. 11.6 OP_FIRST_GUESS There were a couple of misses of DP rate switches in SAA. The tohbans should be alert for this. It is probably a bug in the logic of Lemen_san's very complicated program, and if it does not happen very often I suggest we wait until he returns to Japan to get it fixed. ---------------------------END of REPORT--------------------------------
