Preliminary 2007 SOHO LASCO Coronal Mass Ejection List (Revised 31-Dec-2007 -- GAS) N.B. This is a working version of a catalogue of activity and probable coronal mass ejections detected in white light observations of the LASCO coronagraphs. This list is maintained at the SOHO Experimenters' Operations Facility, and it is based on an examination of only quick-look data, which represents a subset of the final LASCO dataset. Questions about this list should be directed to: planner@lasco6.nascom.nasa.gov . Note some changes to lists from years during solar maximum: 1) Smaller events 'now' taken into account when possible due to the decline of the solar activity cycle. First seen as a very bright loop front on the HALO E Limb with diffuse extensions that surround completely the C2 occulting disk by the time of first appearance (04:30 UT). The bulk of the CME (i.e., the brighter part of the front) develops toward E as projected onto the plane of the sky, while the diffuse extensions expand simetrically all around the occulting disk. The event was first seen in C3 at 05:18 UT, all above the E Limb. The diffuse extensions start to be seen on W by 05:18 UT, and by 06:18 UT the C3 occulting disk appears fully surrounded (signal on N barely above the occulting disk). The mean plane- of-sky speed at PA ~90 deg amounts ~ 570 km/sec, while at PA ~ 260 deg the mean plane-of-sky speed is about ~620 km/sec (LE very diffuse and faint). Both determinations were based on C3 data, and the height-time profile shows practically no acceleration). GOES recorded no significant X-ray activity prior and during the LASCO event (A-level). EIT 195 running difference images show, by around 04:36 UT above the ENE Limb, what appears to be very faint signatures of a backsided CME. No significant activity on the disk. In summary, the event has therefore been determined as a full halo event, most likely backsided. Trailing material. It fades throughout C3. 05:54 W - Ragged loop front. It fades close to the inner edge of C3. 11:47 N - Jet-like front. 14:23 E - Wide and very bright loop front. By 16:30 UT, faint and diffuse extensions surround the C2 occulting disk (very asymmetrically, LE on E already well past the outer edge of C2). Gusty outflow afterward all above the E. The event was first seen in C3 at 14:42 UT barely above the E Limb. The extensions, extremely faint, seem to surround the C3 occulting disk by 20:18 UT, the LE on E being almodst at the outer edge of C3. GOES reported a B9.0 X-ray event on S08E79 between 13:45 - 16:08 UT with peak emission at 14:52 UT. By 14:18 UT, EIT 195 images show signatures all above the E Limb of a strong barely backsided CME, accompanied by a strong wave signature that can be seen propagating to the front side (in particular in the northern hemisphere). See images and movies of the event at: ftp://ares.nrl.navy.mil/pub/lasco/halo/20070124 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 25-Jan-2007: ************ 06:54 E - Wide and very bright loop front. By 08:30 UT, faint and diffuse Asymmetric extensions surround the C2 occulting disk (LE on E already well HALO past the outer edge of C2). Much gusty outflow afterward on E. The event was first seen in C3 at 07:42 UT, all above the E limb with shock signatures to N and S, which seems to surround the C3 occulting disk by 08:42 UT, though the signal on the western hemisphere is extremely faint to be certain. By 09:42 UT, the C3 occulting disk appears indeed surrounded and from there on the event looks as a whole as a very asymmetric halo. The mean plane-of-sky speed of the LE of the event at PA ~ 90 deg was 1260 km/sec showing a decelerated profile - based on a second order fit, we obtained speed > 1500/km/sec below 10 solar radii and around 1000 km/sec at ~21 solar radii - (based on C3 data). GOES observed a C6.3 X-ray event on S08E90 between 06:33 - 07:58 UT with peak emission at 07:14 UT. EIT 195 images show signatures of a CME above the E limb (barely backsided) starting at 05:48 UT. A strong wave signature can be seen propagating toward the front side by 06:48 UT, developing afterward all across the eastern hemisphere. Nice post-flare loops on E start to be seen by around 08:00 UT. The event has therefore been determined as a strong limb event barely backsided that produced at least an asymmetric halo signature, frontsided. Hence, the flank of the event is maybe likely to travel toward earth. Some gusty outflow follows on WNW. Feature I develops as a highly asymmetric Halo CME (elliptical shape), the C2 occulting disk being fully covered by 06:06 UT. By that time the LE on W is already past the outer edge of the C2 FOV, while on E is barely above the occulting disk. It is first seen in C3 on W at 05:18 UT. The mean plane-of-sky speed of the LE at PA 270 deg is ~ 620 km/sec (based on C3 data). By 10:42 UT the LE is already too faint (at ~ 22 solar radii) to keep accurate tracking. Feature II also develops as an symmetric Halo Event. By 05:06 UT, a diffuse signal can be seen all around the N Pole up to almost the E Limb. The signature imprinted by Feature II in the C2 FOV fully covers the occulting disk by 06:30 UT. Feature II is first seen in the C3 FOV above the N Pole at 06:18 UT. By 10:42 UT is no longer discernible. The mean plane-of-sky speed of the LE at PA 336 is ~ 475 km/sec. The HT profile of both events shows practically no acceleration. Neither of the events seems to fully cover the C3 occulting disk by themselves, although if considered as a whole, the complex event shows up as almost as Full Halo event in the C3 FOV. The X-ray activity recorded by GOES is below the A-level. EIT 195 images (running differences) show no signatures on the disk of the events. However, there is an extremely faint signature (barely discernible) of an apparently backsided event all above the NW Limb starting at around 04:48 UT. In summary, the event was determined as a Complex Full Halo Event (with at least 2 components), backsided.
