LASCO Activity Report for
November 02, 2004 SOHO Science Daily Meeting
Planner: K. Schenk, G. Stenborg
Event times are first frame seen in C2 camera unless otherwise noted.
These are preliminary observations for the daily SOHO science discussions.
Final analysis is reported on the Lasco CME list.
An archive of these reports is available.
Points Of Interest
2004/11/01 (Monday)
00:54 UT W Limb Ragged loop front. GOES reported a B7.8 X-ray flare
(N13W48) between 00:34 - 00:40 with peak emission at
00:38 UT.
03:54 UT W Limb Bright loop front. By 04:06 UT, very faint extensions
show up above the S and N Poles. Shortly afterward, a
very tenuous 'full' halo seems to evolve in the C2 FOV.
The loop front is first seen in C3 at 04:42 UT, above
the W Limb. The halo extensions are not discernible,
either because they are too faint to be seen or because
they are masked by the next 'energetic' event (06:06 UT).
Please note that the angular extent of the loop front
developing toward W is only ~ 90 deg (from PA ~230 -
320). The mean plane-of-sky speed of the LE of the loop
front at PA 271 was ~ 555 km/sec (based on C2 and C3
data, C3 only a couple of points due to superposition
with the following event).
GOES reported an M1.1 X-ray flare on NOAA AR 10691
(N12W49) between 03:04 - 03:26 with peak emission at
03:22 UT, most likely asssociated to the events
described above. On the other hand, EIT 195 images
show a strong brightening on the aforementioned AR at
03:24 UT, followed by an intensity disturbance
travelling across the disk developing mainly toward W
and S. In summary, this event has therefore been
determined as a very faint 'full' halo CME, frontsided,
only seen in C2.
06:06 UT W Limb Big and very wide loop front and trailing material.
Proton storm starting at ~06:30 (C2 time). The event is
faster than the previous one (mean plane-of-sky speed
of ~ 790 lm/sec at PA 271, based on C3 data), and it is
first seen in C3 above the W Limb at 06:42 UT. By 08:18
UT seems to have surpassed the CME reported to start at
03:54 UT. EIT 195 images show a big CME coming from
behind the W Limb, starting at 05:48 UT.
14:30 UT W Limb Elongated ragged loop front that fades throughout C3.
It is preceded at 11:06 by a fainter and ragged front,
masked in the trailing material of previous event.
2004/11/02 (Tuesday)
03:06 UT W Limb Elongated spray-like front.
