LASCO Activity Report for
August 27, 2004 SOHO Science Daily Meeting

Planner: K. Schenk, G. Stenborg

Event times are first frame seen in C2 camera unless otherwise noted.
These are preliminary observations for the daily SOHO science discussions.
Final analysis is reported on the Lasco CME list.
An archive of these reports is available.

Points Of Interest

2004/08/26 (Thursday)

00:54 UT W Limb	Faint loop front that quickly fades.

01:54 UT S West	Slow development of a system of faint loops.

09:30 UT W Limb	Diffuse jet-like front developing slightly toward WSW.
			It fades throughout C2.

10:30 UT SS West	Diffuse front. Please note that it is difficult to give
an exact time of first appearance due to the diffuseness
of the front. The event later develops as a system of
wide loop fronts clearly discerned since 12:54 UT. By
18:06 UT, when the front reached the outer edge of C2,
the event already extended over the S Pole. The event is
first seen in C3 above the SW Limb at 16:42 UT. Several
fronts can be discerned developing afterward. In
particular one that is first seen above the S Pole at
19:42 UT. By 00:18 UT on next day the whole event spans
			~ 130 deg from PA ~ 140 - 270. By ~ 05:42 UT (on next
day) the event is practically no longer visible,
apparently without having reached the end of C3 FOV
			(~ 23 solar radii at PA ~ 210). The mean plane-of-sky\
speed for the LE of the outermost loop front at PA ~
			207 was ~ 245 km/sec (based only on C3 data) showing a
slight acceleration. This event apparently disturbs
the evolution of the event reported to start at 01:54 UT,
as inferred from C2 images. However, it is not seen to
be surpassed by our event (C3).
EIT Fe XII images show signatures of a CME event
			(filament lift-off) between 11:00 - 15:24 UT nearby
NOAA AR 10664 (mainly to the SE of it). The ejection is
seen to develop toward SW. On the other hand, GOES did
not record any significant X-ray activity by the time
that could be associated to the event. The event has
therefore been determined as a 'partial' halo CME,
 			frontsided.

13:31 UT N West	Faint spray-like front preceding a ragged loop front
			at 16:30 UT.

18:30 UT W Limb	Small ragged front that fades throughout C2.

20:58 UT E Limb	Very faint expanding loop front becomes discernible.
Another one develops within. The latter apparently
surpasses the first one close to the inner edge of C3.
Difficult to give an exact time of first appearance.

2004/08/27 (Friday)

01:54 UT S East	Extremely narrow and elongated expanding loop front at
the PA of the southern leg of event reported to start at
			20:58 UT on previous day.

09:06 UT W Limb	Bright loop front, cavity and twisted inner core.
