LASCO Activity Report for
August 19, 2004 SOHO Science Daily Meeting

Planner: K. Schenk, G. Stenborg

Event times are first frame seen in C2 camera unless otherwise noted.
These are preliminary observations for the daily SOHO science discussions.
Final analysis is reported on the Lasco CME list.
An archive of these reports is available.

Points Of Interest

2004/08/18 (Wednesday)

04:30 UT WN West	Apparently, a ragged and not well defined front that
quickly fade in the gusty outflow.

11:54 UT S East	Small ragged front that fades throughout C3.

16:54 UT E Limb	Elongated and ragged loop front followed at 18:30 UT
by a bright (wider and faster) ragged loop front and
trailing material. The first front is surpassed by this
second feature in the C3 FOV. By 18:30 UT extremely
faint extensions seem to cover the C2 occultor
(especially to N). EIT Fe XII runnig difference images
show a CME from nearby what later would be NOAA AR 10662
			(nearby N12E28) between ~ 18:12 - 18:48 UT, exhibiting
a dimming and an apparent wave to E of the AR.

17:54 UT WS West	Very bright and wide loop front with structured
interior and trailing material. It is preceded a little
bit to S by a very faint and diffuse front (1), which
is quickly surpassed by the 'big' event. Note that GOES
recorded multiple C-class X-ray activity from NOOA AR
10656 all along the day. In particular, an X1.8 X-ray
occurred on that region (by the time at S13W88) between
17:29 - 17:54 UT with peak emission at 17:40 UT, which
was clearly associated with the big CME event as
depicted in EIT Fe XII running difference images. They
show a strong brightening right on the W Limb above the
AR mentioned above peaking at 17:36 UT followed by the
blow-out of pre-existing structures. Prior to that,
starting at around 16:24 - 16:36 UT a CME signature is
seen coming out from apparently right behind the WSW
limb, likely the EIT counterpart of (1). In particular,
			a C7.2 X-ray flare was recorded on S12W88 between
16:21 - 17:01 UT with peak emission at 16:46 UT.

19:31 UT S East	Slow diffuse loop front developing toward ESE. It fades
			throughout C3.

2004/08/19 (Thursday)

	  S West	Gusty outflow.

02:54 UT E Limb	Elongated and ragged loop front that fades throughout C3.

04:30 UT E Limb	Faint loop front begins to be discernible, developing
slightly toward ESE. Difficutl to give an exact time
			of first appearance.
