LASCO Activity Report for
December 4, 2002 SOHO Science Daily Meeting
Planner: K. Schenk, G. Lawrence
Event times are first frame seen in C2 camera unless otherwise noted.
These are preliminary observations for the daily SOHO science discussions.
Final analysis is reported on the Lasco CME list.
An archive of these reports is available.
Points Of Interest
Total solar eclipse 2002/12/04, totality at 05:56, 06:19,
06:20 and 09:10 UT, subject to viewing location. LASCO/EIT
somewhat erratic 05:20 - 11:00 UT whilst taking images in
support of 4 independent ground-based expeditions
Eclipse teams - note that gusty outflow from the backsided
full halo CME of 2002/12/02 17:54 UT is visible in the LASCO
field of view for the duration of the eclipse period, mainly
in the NW between PA 270-350 and primarily between PA 320-350.
The bright object to the S in C3 images is
Alpha-Scorpio (Antares)
2002/12/03
03:06 UT W Limb Initially quite faint narrow ragged loop front
expands and brightens through C2, slight cavity
10:06 UT N West Fairly wide blob and slight cavity, probably
part of gusty outflow. Another at 16:06
13:27 UT N East Narrow spray-like front with slight cavity,
quie bright. Another at 20:50, both along
same evolving streamer around PA 60
20:06 UT N West Initially narrow ragged asymmetric front
widens through C2. A similar but narrower
front follows at 23:50 around same PA
2002/12/04
01:27 UT N East Faint fan along same streamer at PA 60
02:06 UT N East Faint asymmetric loop front with slight
cavity, to N of earlier sprays, centred
around PA 20. Probably backsided
03:26 UT N East Another fairly bright spray, same PA as
13:27 and 20:50 events, already in
progress at writing. Another at 08:26 UT
03:26 UT N West Another ragged asymmetric front, quite
similar to 20:06 event, widens and fades
through C2, just in progress at writing
10:06 UT N West Small infalling blob starts from ~2.9 Rs
around PA 315
