proposal
I propose to examine EIT images prior to and during the initiation of flares and CME's for evidence of transient activity in pre-existing features that may be associated with energy release mechanisms in the corona. LASCO data would be valuable in determining coronal changes prior to flares and CME's and launch times of the CME's themselves. Ground-based data bases and images (where available) will be used to establish changes in chromospheric features.

Transient Activity in Coronal Feaures Prior to Flares and CME's

update added on 2000/12/08 at 16:14:24
A paper titled "Eruption and Acceleration of Flare-associated CME Loops" has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Geophysical Research. This paper is based on material presented earlier at the Solar Eruptive Events COnference at Catholic University in March, 2000. I now propose to examine additional flare-associated events and also examine and characterize the eruption and acceleration of quiescent filaments as observed by EIT and LASCO. Events to be examined include filament eruptions on April 23, 1998 and September 12, 2000.
