The modern theory of solar cyclicity supposes the generation
of the kilogauss magnetic field by the dynamo mechanism at the
base of the convection zone. One of the main difficulties of the
theory of solar cyclicity is connected with the problem of the
general magnetic field reversal. Observations of the field and
the dynamics of neutral magnetic lines allow us to consider that
for the last 120 years this process took place in all the 11-year
cycles at the maximum of activity. The properties of two 11-year
cycles (even-odd) forming a 22-year magnetic cycle are highly
correlated. It means that a magnetic cycle represents a single
physical process based on the inner magnetic field which is
generated simultaneously for two 11-year cycles.
A significant parameter in close relationship with the solar
cycle appears to be the depth of the effective magnetic pole q
which is defined as the depth of the common intersection of
straight lines tangent to the polar coronal plumes at their base.
From eclipse observations, this quantity appears indeed closely
related to the phase of the magnetic cycle and to the large-scale
zonal structure of the magnetic field.
We would like to use daily images from the synoptic program
at 19.5 nm and 17.1 nm to determine q and study its time
evolution during a period which, to be fully efficient, should
cover the whole duration of the EIT experiment, presently
expected to include a significant part of the ascent of cycle 23.
