Polar coronal brightening has been observed at around 35 -37 GHz by
three groups (Kosugi et al 1986; Kundu & Mccullogh 1972; and a Russian
group 1980). The precise explanation of this brightening is not known at
the present time, although several suggestions have been made in the
literature. Similar brightening has also been observed at 17 GHz with
the Nobeyama radio heliograph. We feel this is an appropriate time to
revisit the question of interpreting the polar microwave and millimeter
brightening using Nobeyama 17 GHz (and if possible 34 GHz) data along with
simultaneously obtained SOHO EIT and possibly UVCS data. We propose to choose a
dozen quiet sun days during the period of operation of SOHO when one sees
polar brightening at 17 GHz and for which SOHO EIT data are also
available. SOHO data will permit us to obtain temperature, density and emission
measure of polar plumes and interplume regions, in order for us to compute
the radio emission and compare it with the observed values. Eventually we
may be be able to understand the cause of the brightening from the two sets
of data.
In addition we plan to approach the problem from the opposite direction:
namely, to choose a number of good coronal hole observations in the
EIT database containing isolated polar plumes and then study the
corresponding properties in microwave images, in both quiescent and
flaring states.
