I propose to collaborate with Jean-Pierre Delaboudiniere and/or Joe Gurman
to study the onset of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) by comparing EIT images
with time series observations from the MkIII coronagraph, He I 10830 Imager
and H-alpha Digital Prominence Monitor (disk and limb) at the Mauna Loa
Solar
Observatory. Each of the instruments at Mauna Loa produce time series
observations between roughly 17:00-24:00 UT with a time cadence of 3
minutes.
This unique capability provides the opportunity to study the dynamics
and detailed morphology of coronal mass ejections and other coronal
transient
phenomena. Coronal mass ejections are currently being observed with these
instruments at a rate of roughly 1-2 per month (solar minimum). Although
more
than 1000 CMEs have been observed with SMM, MkIII, and LASCO, the exact
mechanism responsible for initiating these events is still not completely
understood. In particular, the precise causal relationship between
prominence
or filament eruptions, CMEs, and the subsequent magnetic reconnection or
"flare" is still unproven, although it is thought that many CMEs are
initiated
by prominence or filament eruptions, and then followed by magnetic
reconnection
or a "flare". H-alpha filaments and prominences are routinely observed with
the HAO digital prominence monitor and filament channels are visible in many
EIT He 304 and Fe IX,X 171 and Fe XII 195 images.

For each coronal mass ejection observed with the HAO MkIII coronagraph
(typically 1-2 per month), I propose to compare the Mauna Loa time series
observations with EIT He 304, Fe IX,X 171, Fe XII 195 images to study this
causal relationship between CMEs, filament and prominence eruptions, and
flares. I will provide full access of the Mauna Loa time series data to
Jean-Pierre, Joe, or any other EIT consortium member who is interested in
these data.
