proposal
From October 1996 to January 1997 Ulysses was situated rougly above
the west limb of the Sun. This provides a unique opportunity to
directly compare SOHO limb observations of CMEs with their solar
wind counterparts far from the Sun using the Ulysses solar wind
data (plasma and magnetic field). The study utilizes (1) SOHO EIT
images to correlate an active region with CME emission, (2) SOHO
LASCO data to estimate the CME emission time from the Sun and
the CME speed close to the Sun, and (3) Ulysses solar wind data
to analyze the CME expansion into interplanetary space.

We focus on the following west limb CME events on during 1996:
Oct. 5, Nov. 28, and Dec. 23-25. We will use EIT images (He II,
304 Ang) to correlate the active region, which was present
for an extended interval, with emission of CMEs observed at
these times by Lasco and later by Ulysses.
