LASCO Activity Report for
October 23, 2006 SOHO Science Daily Meeting

Planner: K. Schenk, G. Stenborg

Event times are first frame seen in C2 camera unless otherwise noted.
These are preliminary observations for the daily SOHO science discussions.
Final analysis is reported on the Lasco CME list.
An archive of these reports is available.

Points Of Interest

- 2006/10/22: Venus starts to be visible in the C2 FOV
(upper right quadrant, moving from right to left).

2006/10/20 (Friday)

00:54 UT W Limb	Very faint ragged front.

14:54 UT W Limb	Ragged front starts to be discernible. It fades
			throughout C3.

20:06 - 24:00 UT	NO LASCO CME watch due to special observation
program for Mars Express and Venus Express
				Campaign.

2006/10/21 (Saturday)

12:06 UT S West	Slow development of a system of extremley faint loop
fronts. Difficult to give an exact time of first
			appearance.

20:06 - 24:00 UT	NO LASCO CME watch due to special observation
program for Mars Express and Venus Express
				Campaign.

2006/10/22 (Sunday)

19:31 UT E Limb	Diffuse loop front (preceded by a very diffuse
brightening at 18:54 UT). After the data gap it is
seen developing as a very wide expanding ragged
loop front, already covering all the eastern
hemisphere, LE past the outer edge of the C2 FOV
(the event extends up to past the poles, on NNW and
SSW). It is first seen in C3 on 10/23 at 00:42 UT,
covering al the eastern limb. The mean plane-of-sky
speed of the LE at PA 87 is ~ 242 km/sec, showing
practically no acceleration (based on C3 data).
No X-ray events were recorded by GOES, nor
significant X-ray activity could be observed on
EIT 195 images prior to the time of first appearance
of the event in C2. Therefore, the source of the
event is most probably on the backside of the disk,
somewhere close to the E limb..

20:06 - 24:00 UT	NO LASCO CME watch due to special observation
program for Mars Express and Venus Express
				Campaign.

2006/10/23 (Monday)

02:06 UT S West	Brighty blob-like front. Gusty outflow.

Last C2 image available by the time of writing: 05:06 UT.
